A bittersweet tale of a despondent teen who finds inspiration through an unlikely subway encounter. Mike, an isolated, depressed teenager, is resigned to living a joyless life - hiding out in his room avoiding his unstable mother and dreading his weekly trips to his psychiatrist. Description:
Anywhere from 30 to 45 years old. Mentally challenged, about 7 or 8 years old inside. Herbie is slump shouldered, with thick arms and legs, thick jaw, soft, overweight. At first glance, he might come off as intimidating until he opens his mouth. He steps onto a subway train like a kid entertaining the relatives in his living room. Hes joyous, uninhibited and utterly focused driving the subway train.

Character:
Gender:
RUTHIE
Female
Description:
Late 30s to Mid 40s. Thin. New York. This once beautiful, bright, high strung, and high maintenance woman has been in and out of institutions. Her brain is fried from electro-shock therapy, psych meds and battling with suicidal depression. Now stabilized and living at home, she could lose it anytime-flying in a rage, fits of weeping, or so out of it, that getting out of bed is a major accomplishment. Theres still a human being in there, though shes hardly able to deal with being a mother. Mike is the light of her life. One great scene.

Hes complicated-skinny, depressed, frustrated with his life, plagued with allergies and fears and a fatalistic sense of humor. He lives this half life, hiding in his room from his mentally unstable mother. He has to go into the city (which he hates) once a week to see a psychiatrist (who he hates as well). In spite if his afforts to distance himslef from his mother, its clear that mother and son are joined at the hip. Must be a good actor. A combination of a young Woody Allen, Ben Stiller and Timothy Hutton from Ordinary People)
